زمینه و هدف: شرایط اجتماعی یکی از عوامل بروز و تکرار معلولیت در خانواده است. این پژوهش با هدف بررسی ویژگی‌های اجتماعی والدین خویشاوند و غیرخویشاوند با بیش از یک‌فرزند استثنایی به‌منظور تدوین برنامهٔ مداخلات پیشگیرانه و آموزشی و حمایتی انجام شد. 
روش‌بررسی: پژوهش از نوع تحقیقات توصیفی-تحلیلی و از نظر روش پس‌رویدادی بود. جامعهٔ آماری شامل والدین دارای بیش از یک‌فرزند استثنایی خویشاوند و غیرخویشاوند استان مازندران در سال ۱۳۹۶ بود. نمونهٔ مطالعه‌شده شامل ۱۵۰ خانوادهٔ دارای بیش از یک‌فرزند استثنایی (۷۵ خویشاوند و ۷۵ غیرخویشاوند)، با روش نمونه‌گیری تصادفی ساده و چندمرحله‌ای انتخاب شدند. ابزار پژوهش، پرسشنامهٔ بررسی ویژگی زیستی، شناختی، روانی و اجتماعی والدین (افروز، ۱۳۸۳) بود که با مصاحبه با والدین تکمیل گردید. داده‌ها با استفاده از نرم‌افزار SPSS نسخهٔ ۲۰ تحلیل و از آزمون مجذور کای در سطح معناداری (۰٫۰۵=α) استفاده شد. 
یافته‌ها: نتایج پژوهش نشان داد که در توزیع متغیرهای اجتماعی تحصیلات مادر، تحصیلات پدر، شغل مادر، محل سکونت و وضعیت سکونت و سابقهٔ مصرف مواد توسط پدر در والدین خویشاوند و غیر‌خویشاوند اختلاف معناداری وجود نداشت؛ اما در متغیر شغل پدر (۰٫۰۲۰=p) در والدین خویشاوند و غیرخویشاوند اختلاف معنادار بود. 
نتیجه‌گیری: یافته‌های پژوهش بیانگر تأثیر عوامل و ویژگی اجتماعی در بروز و تکرار معلولیت در خانواده بوده که توجه به آن در مشاورهٔ خانواده و ژنتیک ضروری است.
