Background and Objective: Many mothers of children with behavioral disorders have problems on cognitive emotion regulation and communication. Also, behavioral disorders are as one of the most frequent neurodevelopmental disorders and the common cause that children referred psychologists and professionals. The enduring nature of social reaction easily leads to social isolation. This cause is that children and adolescents with behavioral disorders have a few friends. Sometimes they attempt onto the least chance for interaction with others and set up a vicious circle. At seems that parenting program based on Barkley model training could improve the cognitive emotion regulation in mothers of children with behavioral disorders. The parenting program based on Barkley model training has considerable effect on attitude of parent than their children. Because these children are facing main problems in behavior and interaction with parent. Parents, especially mothers of children with behavioral disorders in emotional reactions face many challenges. Undoubtedly, inappropriate parenting can lead to inappropriate cognitive emotion regulation in mother mothers of children with behavioral disorder. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of parenting program based on Barkley model training on cognitive emotion regulation in mothers of children with behavioral disorder.
Methods: The present research was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test, post-test design and control group. The participants were 30 mothers who have children with behavioral disorder aged 35-45 years old in 2018-2019 academic year. They were from middle socio-economical class. Subjects were selected by convenient sampling method from consultation clinic of Armaghan in Varamin province. They were divided into experimental and control groups, each group consisting of 15 mothers randomly. The experimental group participated in parenting program based on Barkley model training in 10 sessions (two sessions weekly; each lasts for 80 minutes), while control group did not. The cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire Garnefski and Kraaij were used for assessment of all participants. The cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire Garnefski and Kraaij were completed by mothers in pre-test and post-test. Data were collected through the questionnaire before and after the training sessions. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used with 24th version of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). (P < 0/05).
Results: The first, normality of variables and contingency of variance and covariance assumptions were tested. The Kolmogorov Smirnov test showed that all variables were normal. Also, Box test confirmed contingency of variance-covariance assumption. So, assumptions of multivariate analysis of covariance test confirmed and can be used the multivariate analysis of covariance test for analysis of data. Results of multivariate analysis of covariance showed that experimental and control groups had significant difference in adjustment emotional regulation strategies and no adjustment emotional regulation strategies variables in the post-test stage (p <0.001). The results of multiple analysis of covariance showed parenting program based on Barkley model training had significant effect on adjustment emotional regulation strategies and no adjustment emotional regulation strategies variables in mothers of children with behavioral disorder (p <0.001). In fact, parenting program based on Barkley model training has led to the reducing adjustment emotional regulation strategies and increase no adjustment emotional regulation strategies in mothers of children with behavioral disorder. It can be said that according to Eta square 58%, and 54% of variations in variables such as on adjustment emotional regulation strategies and no adjustment emotional regulation strategies in mothers of children with behavioral disorder respectively, can be explained by the subjects’ participation in parenting program based on Barkley model training.
Conclusion: The parenting program based on Barkley model training can improved cognitive emotion regulation in mothers of children with behavioral disorder. Based on finding of this research, planning for such training programs alike the parenting program based on san Barkley model training has an important role on the cognitive emotion regulation in mothers of children with behavioral disorder.
