Background and Objective: Addiction is a recurrent and chronic mental illness that leads to severe motivational disorders and lack of behavioral control. In the pathology of substance use disorders, the role of personality traits has always been important, and personality disorders make a person more vulnerable to addiction, and then the addiction itself exacerbates the existing disorders, and this vicious cycle continues. A review of the literature in this field suggests that antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder are the most common personality disorders associated with substance use disorders, and most research has focused on these two disorders. Another variable studied in the present study is empathy. Empathy is the ability to put oneself in the place of others and to better understand their feelings and experiences. Empathy with the drug addict, by creating a sense of trust, lets him know that he needs treatment and that the staff and the treatment environment will accompany him in this regard. It is important to know the personality and behavioral characteristics of addicts in order to fight addiction as well as its prevention and treatment; And considering the importance of empathy in addiction on the other hand and also as the review of research background showed in the field of comparing research variables ie empathy and traits of antisocial and borderline personality in addicted and non-addicted people no direct study has been done and research gap in this field It feels. Therefore, considering the importance of the issue in the target population, the present study was conducted to determine the comparison of empathy and antisocial and borderline personality traits in addicted and non-addicted individuals.
Methods: In this causal-comparative study, 200 people (100 men with substance abuse and 100 normal men) were selected by convenience sampling method, then the groups were matched in terms of demographic characteristics and according to Davis (1983) empathy questionnaire and clinical test. Millon (1994) multi-axis responded. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24 and multivariate analysis of variance with significance level α = 0.05.
Results: The results showed that there is a difference between addicted people and normal people in terms of empathy and anti-social and borderline personality traits. Also, the mean scores of antisocial and borderline personality in addicts were higher than non-addicts, but the mean scores of empathy in addicts were lower than non-addicts (p <0.001).
Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be said that empathy and anti-social and borderline personality traits play an important role in the tendency to addiction.
