Background & Objective: Cerebral palsy is a group of multi-dimensional and non-stationary disturbances in motion. Children with cerebral palsy need a careful attention of their caregivers, especially their mothers, in their daily living activities. Therefore, the use of psychological interventions to reduce marital conflict and increase mothers' self-efficacy is very important. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a process-oriented approach known as one of the third wave psychotherapies. The overall goal of this treatment is to achieve psychological flexibility so that there is no need to eliminate and eliminate the bad feeling, but in spite of this feeling, the person moves towards behavior based on the value of thought. On the other hand, the main purpose of motivational interviewing is to promote intrinsic motivation in order to form and perpetuate behavioral changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Comparison of the effectiveness of group counseling through motivational interviewing and treatment based acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on marital satisfaction and self-efficacy of mothers with children with cerebral palsy.
  • The present study was a quasi-experimental study of unequal groups. The quasi-experimental design of the present study was pre-test, post-test and follow-up (1 month) with a control group. The statistical population of the present study included all mothers with children with cerebral palsy who referred to educational and rehabilitation centers for the physically disabled in Kermanshah in 2021. The research sample was 34 volunteer mothers who were selected by available sampling method based on the results of pre-test (Enrich et al. Marital Satisfaction, 1987 and Scherer et al., 1982) and inclusion criteria and were randomly divided into two groups. Trial motivational interview (11 people), acceptance and commitment based treatment (10 people) and control group (13 people) were replaced. Criteria for inclusion in the study included having a minimum cycle education, having children with cerebral palsy, consent to participate in the research and having physical health. Mothers without the ability to read, absence of more than two consecutive sessions in the treatment process, simultaneous membership in treatment and rehabilitation groups, non-compliance with group rules and lack of respect and consent to continue attending the sessions were the criteria for leaving the study. The instruments used in this study were the Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire of Olson et al. (1987) and the self-efficacy questionnaire of Scherer et al. (1982) which were completed before the intervention, after that and 1 month follow-up by mothers in both experimental and control groups Participants in the experimental groups received acceptance and commitment-based therapy in 12 sessions (90 minutes per session) and motivational interviews in 11 sessions (90 minutes per session), during which time the control group received no training. Data analysis was used in two sections of descriptive statistics including mean and standard deviation and in the inferential section, analysis of covariance mixed with repeated measures was used. The analysis of this research was performed with version 26 of SPSS software.
  • Findings show that treatment based on acceptance and commitment and motivational interviews on marital satisfaction (P = 0.001, F = 9.877) and self-efficacy (P = 0.001, F = 7.586) of mothers of children with Cerebral palsy is effective. The effect coefficient of acceptance and commitment treatment on the variable of marital satisfaction in the post-test is 0.46 and in the follow-up is 0.36 and the motivational interview in the post-test is 0.44 and in the follow-up is 0.28. Also, the effect coefficient of acceptance and commitment treatment based on self-efficacy variable in post-test is 0.47 and in follow-up is 0.28 and motivational interview in post-test is 0.45 and in follow-up is 0.49.
  • Due to the effectiveness of treatment methods based on acceptance and commitment and motivational interviews, it has been effective on marital satisfaction and self-efficacy of women with cerebral palsy, because in the medical system of the country less psychological interventions for families (psycho-social education) and Particular attention is paid to motivational methods and counselors and therapists of educational centers do not have enough knowledge about cognitive-behavioral interventions in preventing and correcting psychological, behavioral and emotional problems of parents with children with cerebral palsy. Familiarity with skills related to attentional interview technique It is necessary by counselors and its application at the level of couples, especially in families with children with cerebral palsy, and can play an important role in the success of educational and treatment programs.
