Background & Objective: The choice of an effective therapeutic approach in improving family functions has always been considered by family therapists. This research aimed to determine the efficacy of narrative therapy on family resilience and Marital Intimacy of couples with marital conflict.
Methods: The method was a semi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design and a three-month follow-up with the control group. The statistical population included all Conflicting couple who were referred to the Happy Life and Mobin Counseling Center in Tabriz City, Iran, in 2023-2024. A sample of 16 couples (32 people) qualified volunteers was included in the study by purposive sampling and divided into the experimental and control groups (8 couples in each group). The questionnaires used in this research included the family resilience Scale (Sikbi, 2005), and the Marital Intimacy Questionnaire (Bagarozzi, 2001). The narrative therapy intervention was performed on the experimental group for 10 sessions once a week. After administering the posttest and follow–up, the research data were analyzed using analysis of variance with repeated measurements and Bonferroni post hoc test in the SPSS26 software (α=0.05).
Results: Results showed that the effect of time, group, and the interaction of time and group on the scores of family resilience and Marital Intimacy were significant (p<0.001). In the narrative therapy group there was a significant difference between the scores of variables of family resilience and Marital Intimacy in the pretest and posttest stages, as well as pretest and follow–up (p<0.05). While in the variables of family resilience and Marital Intimacy, no significant difference was observed between the posttest and follow–up stages. This finding indicated the persistence of the intervention effect on the aforementioned variables.
Conclusion: The narrative therapy leads to an increase in Marital Intimacy and family resilience, Therefore, counselors and couple therapists may use this treatment to improve the family resilience, Marital Intimacy.
