Objective: Investigation of mental health in disabled people using both components of psychopathology and positive psychology will provide more complete information about the state of their mental health. The aim of this study is to compare the psychological well-being and general health of physically disabled persons with normal people.

Methods: In this causal-comparative study, sixty disabled persons (30 females, 30 males) and sixty normal participants (30 females, 30 males) were selected voluntarily through the convenience sampling in Qaemshahr, Iran. The research instruments included Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). The used statistical methods were descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA).

Results: The results of MANOVA showed that there were significant differences between two groups based on the environmental mastery (p=0.009), autonomy (p=0.034), personal growth (p=0.020), somatic symptoms (p=0.009), and social dysfunction (p=0.040), but in terms of the research variables the differences between two groups of disabled women and men were not significant.

Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, it seems that disability leads to reduce the general health and psychological well-being. For promotion of mental health of disabled people, attention to the components of mental health is important from the perspective of both the psychopathology and positive psychology approaches.
