Abstract

Objective: Physical exercise and sports have been suggested as techniques for improving adaptive behavior and reducing aggression among girls with intellectual disability. Yet, there is no unanimous agreement over the superior type of physical exercise and sport. Accordingly, the present research compared effect of a series of indigenous games and rhythmic yoga movements on aggression and adaptive behaviors among girls with intellectual disability.
Methods: This research employed a quasi-experimental design. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 30 girls with intellectual disability aged 10-14 years old from exceptional children’s school in Genaveh-Iran.  The participants were assigned to two groups doing indigenous games and yoga. Both groups did exercises for eight weeks. The measurement tools were Aggression Inventory (Qazelseflu et al, 2008) and Adaptive Behavior Scale (Vineland, 19840. Correlation t-test and Covariance Analysis were utilized for data analysis.
Results: Results showed that indigenous games and rhythmic yoga movements significantly reduced aggression (P<0.01) and improved adaptive behavior (P<0.001).Yet, indigenous game was more successful in reducing aggression than rhythmic yoga movement, though both groups were equally effective in improving adaptive behavior (P=0.13).
Conclusion: It can be concluded that the indigenous games and rhythmic yoga movements can result in reducing aggression and improving adaptive behavior among girls with intellectual disability.
