Introduction: Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is one of the most common personality disorders that have a significant impact on interpersonal and couple relationships. Identifying the background of its formation helps a lot in preventing its symptoms in adulthood. For this reason, the aim of the present study was to determine the role of parental bonding in developmental period and shame on the development of pathological narcissism symptoms. Method: The descriptive research method was correlation and regression. The statistical population of this survey included all the students of the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in the academic year of 2023-2024 semesters from which 280 students were selected Purposive sampling method as the final sample. Then they completed the questionnaires of Pathological Narcissism Scale (PNI), Parental bonding Instrument (PBI) and Test of Conscious Affection 3 (TOSCA-3). Findings: The findings showed that parental bonding in the developmental period affects vulnerable narcissism (VN) (β=-0.19; P<0.001) and grandiose narcissism (GN) (β=-0.23; P<0.001). ) has a negative effect. Shame has a positive effect on vulnerable narcissism (VN) (β=0.26; P<0.001) and grandiose narcissism (GN) (β=0.21; P<0.001). Conclusion: According to these results, it can be said that the strict and humiliating behavior of parents can cause shame in children, which manifests itself in the form of severe personality disorders such as narcissism in adulthood. These results show the importance of healthy care. In the mental health of people, it shows that parents need training in this field
