Background & Objective: Bereavement care is an important part of the work of a wide range of health and social care professionals, yet it is often under-recognized and considered a low priority in health care policy and practice. Bereaved people may feel particularly isolated and unable to access the benefits of social support. Bereaved and bereaved people experience a heightened sense of grief through social isolation and lack of appropriate bereavement care. Adolescents with a history of bereavement experience many psychological problems and it affects their personal and professional life. Therefore, addressing their psychological problems seems very necessary. Adolescents with a history of bereavement have behavioral problems, depression and problems in emotion regulation. Since so far no study has investigated the effectiveness of treatment based on commitment and acceptance on the cognitive regulation of emotions of adolescents with a history of bereavement, so the purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of commitment and acceptance therapy on the cognitive emotion regulation of adolescents with a history of bereavement. .
Methods: In this semi-experimental study, with pre-test and post-test, 30 eligible volunteers in the age range of 12 to 18 years were included in the study, 15 of whom were randomly assigned. They were in the intervention group and 15 people were in the control group. The variable scores of cognitive regulation of emotion were compared by means of cognitive regulation of emotion questionnaire (Granofsky et al., 2007) in two time periods before and after the treatment. Data analysis was done using covariance analysis. The significance level of the tests was 0.05.
Results:  The analysis of the data showed that the score of cognitive regulation of emotions in adolescents with a history of bereavement in the intervention group and after receiving treatment increased significantly compared to the control group, respectively (P=0.001).
Conclusion: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of commitment and acceptance therapy on the cognitive emotion regulation in adolescents with a history of bereavement. The results of the present study showed that commitment and acceptance therapy has a significant effect on the cognitive regulation of emotions in adolescents with a history of bereavement and can lead to cognitive regulation of emotions in these patients. The results of this research are in line with the study of Shibani et al., who stated that commitment and acceptance therapy in a group is effective on cognitive strategies of emotion regulation and self-control in patients with coronary heart disease. Also, it is in line with the study of Zakii et al., who stated that treatment based on acceptance and commitment improves sleep quality, experiential avoidance, and emotion regulation in people with insomnia. It is also consistent with the original study of Azad et al., who stated that therapy based on acceptance and commitment has a significant effect on the cognitive regulation of emotion and ambiguity tolerance of students with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Shibani et al. reported that therapy based on acceptance and commitment is a behavioral therapy that uses the skills of mindfulness, acceptance, and cognitive diffusion to improve people's psychological flexibility. In fact, acceptance and commitment therapy is a context-oriented approach that challenges patients to accept their thoughts and feelings and commit themselves to making the necessary changes. In the theory of acceptance and commitment, people try to accept their life conditions without avoiding disturbing thoughts and feelings by providing examples and comparisons. Acceptance and commitment therapy has been shown to improve a wide range of psychological problems, including anger, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, substance abuse, and anxiety. The results of the present study showed that commitment and acceptance therapy has a significant effect on the cognitive regulation of emotions in adolescents with a history of bereavement and can lead to the improvement of cognitive regulation of emotions in these patients. Commitment and acceptance therapy can be used as a complementary treatment to improve the cognitive emotion regulation in adolescents with a history of bereavement.
