Objective: In life, there are certain critical stages that deeply affect one's life. One of the most critical and important stages in a woman's life is pregnancy. The effect of this period on maternal and fetal health and subsequently on neonatal and child health in the future is very extensive. Maternal health, delivery, and birth of a healthy baby are affected by biological (diseases, genetic, etc.) and non-biological factors or otherwise social determinants of health.
The purpose of this study was to provide information on disability prevention using social determinants of health, by laying emphasis on maternal lifestyle during pregnancy.
Methods: In this descriptive study we reviewed the documents, library resources and articles that were related to lifestyle and its role on pregnancy outcomes with the following keywords: lifestyle, pregnancy, social determinants of health, and disability.
Conclusions: Some health issues are easily preventable (e.g. fastening the seatbelt), but many others like physical inactivity, poor nutrition, smoking and substance abuse are deeply rooted in one’s culture and socio-economic status, and are very difficult to deal with.
