Background & Objective: Depression is the most common mental disorder in adolescence, and epidemiological studies have reported a high prevalence rate for adolescent depression worldwide, especially in girls, because during adolescence, psychosocial maturation and rapid brain growth make adolescents more sensitive to stressful environments and life changes Depression causes a lot of psychological and emotional harm to the individual, one of the most important harms resulting from it is suicide. Suicide is a multi-stage process that includes suicidal thoughts, planning for suicide, attempting suicide, and taking action to end one's life; therefore, suicidal thoughts are the first step to ending one's life and one of the predictors of suicide. Suicidal thoughts are a type of mental preoccupation with death that has not yet taken on a practical aspect. Various types of psychological interventions have been developed to reduce negative psychological symptoms and improve depression, one of which is rapid eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing on suicidal thoughts in depressed adolescent girls.
Methods: This research was a semi-experimental type with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. Among depressed adolescent girls referred to the psychology clinics of Yazd city, 30 qualified volunteers were included in the study with the available sampling method, 15 of them were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 15 to the control group. Suicidal thoughts variable scores were compared using of the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI) at two time points before and after Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 22 software and covariance analysis. The significance level of the tests was 0.05.
Results: Data analysis showed that the score of the suicidal thoughts in depressed adolescent girls in the intervention group and after receiving Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing decreased significantly compared to the control group (P<0.001). Based on the results of the effect size, 0/71 % of the difference between the intervention group and the control group in the changes in the suicidal thoughts variable was due to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
Conclusion: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing reduces suicidal thoughts. In explaining this finding it can be said that repeated exposure to various stimuli in training sessions and examining the causes of depression and suicidal thoughts among depressed adolescent girls in the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing leads to a reduction and elimination of sensitivities to stimuli, as well as the elimination of discouraging responses and behaviors indicative of depression in individuals. It is also said that in mental confrontation using memory, information can be produced that is essentially the same as real experience; as a result, it seems that imagining events will have a similar effect on the nervous system as real experience. At this stage, the individual is trained to let go of their thinking errors, suicidal thoughts, and erroneous inferences, to orient their thoughts, attitudes, and expectations in a new and fresh way, and to replace their erroneous behavior with constructive behavior based on self-confidence. The results of the present study showed that 6 sessions of 60 minutes of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has a significant effect on the suicidal thoughts in depressed adolescent girls and can reduce suicidal thoughts in these patients.
