Abstract Background and Objective: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that impair cognitive functions. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and binaural beats on improving cognitive functions, including attention, memory, and executive functioning, in individuals with OCD.
Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group and a one-month follow-up. The statistical population consisted of all women with OCD referred to counseling centers in Zanjan in 2024. Forty-five eligible volunteers were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental groups (ACT and binaural beats) and one control group (15 participants per group). Data were collected using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Goodman, 1989), the N-Back Working Memory Test (Kirchner, 1958), the Go/No-Go Test, and the Digit Symbol Test (Smith, 1973). Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni post-hoc tests in SPSS version 25. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05.
Findings: The effects of time, group, and the interaction of time and group on cognitive function scores in individuals with OCD were significant (p < 0.001). Both ACT and binaural beats interventions were effective in improving cognitive functions (p < 0.001). However, no significant difference was found between the two interventions in their effectiveness on the variables (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and binaural beats can be used to improve cognitive functions in individuals with OCD.
