هدف: اتیسم نوعی اختلال رشدی در کودکان است که با رفتارهای ارتباطی- کلامی غیر‌طبیعی، همراه با رفتارهای تکراری، مشخص می‌شود. علت اصلی این اختلال ناشناخته بوده و تأثیر فوق‌العاده‌ای بر روی افراد، خانواده و جامعه دارد. هدف از انجام این پژوهش، بررسی تأثیر شدت اتیسم کودکان بر امیدواری و عزت‌نفس مادرانشان است. روش‌بررسی: پژوهش حاضر از نوع همبستگی بود. پنجاه نفر از کودکان مبتلا به اتیسم و مادرانشان در تهران از طریق نمونه‌گیری مبتنی‌بر هدف انتخاب شدند و پرسشنامه‌های مقیاس رتبه‌بندی گیلیام و عزت‌نفس روزنبرگ و مقیاس امیدواری میلر بر روی آن‌ها اجرا شد. داده‌های به‌دست‌آمده از طریق همبستگی پیرسون تحلیل شدند.
یافته‌ها: نتایج نشان داد شدت درجهٔ اتیسم کودکان با میزان امیدواری در مادران رابطهٔ منفی ولی غیر‌معنا‌دار دارد (۰٫۵۵=p). همچنین بین شدت درجهٔ اتیسم کودکان و عزت‌نفس مادران نیز رابطهٔ منفی معنا‌دار وجود دارد (۰٫۰۴=p). یافته‌ها نشان داد شدت درجهٔ اتیسم میزان امیدواری در مادران را پیش‌بینی نمی‌کند ولی ۱۳٪ از عزت‌نفس مادران را تبیین می‌کند (۰٫۰۰۴=p).
نتیجه‌گیری: با‌توجه به نتایج پژوهش حاضر، شدت درجهٔ اتیسم کودکان می‌تواند عزت‌نفس مادران را پیش‌بینی کند، بنابراین پیشنهاد می‌شود در مراکز آموزشی و توانبخشی برای کودکان مبتلا به اتیسم، برنامه‌هایی جهت تقویت عزت‌نفس و خودکارآمدی والدین به‌خصوص مادران طراحی گردد.
