Background & Objective: Considering the prevalence of divorce in most countries as well as in Iran, and since divorce often affects the whole family, it is very important to understand the phenomenon of divorce. The lived experience of couples applying for divorce can help to identify the phenomenon of divorce. On the other hand, based on the systemic approaches of family therapy, the couple's family of origin can play an important role in the formation of conflicts in the life of the couple, so the present study aims to investigate the phenomenological reasons for divorce, emphasizing the role of the family of origin among the couples applying for divorce in Yazd province.
Method: The current research is a phenomenological method and tries to investigate the lived experiences of couples applying for divorce. The participants of the research included couples applying for divorce who were referred to justice counseling centers in Yazd province, and among these couples, 12 couples were selected for interviews with the purposeful sampling method. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview program and analyzed using Collaizi data analysis techniques.
results: In total, from the review coding, and extraction of themes from interviews with couples applying for divorce, three themes were extracted in the form of three general categories: a) financial and economic reasons, b) cultural and sociological reasons, c) emotional and psychological reasons.
Conclusion: The findings showed that, based on the lived experiences of couples applying for divorc, financial, cultural, and psychological reasons can constitute the main components of the reasons for couples' divorce, and the couples' family of origin can also play an effective role in the formation of these reasons. The findings of the present study have implications for counselors, especially family and couple therapists. These findings can provide significant recommendations for couples in the field of premarital counseling and postmarital couple therapy
