Abstract
Background and objective: The aim of this study was to compare the cohesion of the family, perceived stress, and self-conception in mothers of children with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity.
Methods: This study is a causal comparative type. The population consisted of all mothers of children with attention deficit / hyperactivity and also mothers of normal children in the city of Rasht (1392). 101 mothers (49 mothers of children with attention deficit / hyperactivity, and 52 mothers with normal children) were selected in non-random and accessible sampling method. To measure the variables, Perceived Stress Scale of Cohen et al (1983), the scale of family cohesion and Nar Bloom (1994) and Beck's self-concept questionnaire (1989) were used. In order to analyze the obtained data, descriptive statistics mean and standard deviation and multivariate variance analysis methods were applied.
Results: The results of the multivariate analysis of variance showed a significant difference between the two groups of mothers of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity and mothers of normal children in the total score of family cohesion(p=0.000) , perceived stress(p=0.001), self-concept (p=0.02) and their aspects.
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that mothers of children without attention deficit / hyperactivity compared to mothers of children suffering from attention deficit / hyperactivity have higher levels of self-conception and family cohesion while having lower degree of perceived stress. Thus, by designing appropriate training programs for parents, the risk of attention deficit / hyperactivity effects on family members, particularly mothers must be eliminated.
